[Video] The Subscription is KILLING Final Cut Pro? Why the Hate is Wrong
What is the Apple Creator Studio Subscription?
Apple created a new bundle called Apple Creator Studio. It includes all of their creative apps like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and even the iPad versions of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. This bundle comes as a subscription and that is where the hate started. But before we go into why the hate is there, let me explain why i think it is overkill.
Why the Hate Against the Apple Subscription is Overkill
There are two truths i want to talk about. The first one is about how creators like me frame things. As a YouTuber you try to make titles that people click on. I also used this negative framing in my video about the Apple Creator Studio. The problem is that even if you don’t say anything negative directly, the viewer picks up on the framing and starts thinking negatively about it. So part of the hate is actually fueled by us content creators without even intending to.
The second truth is about mindset. Most people are wired to think negative first. If i tell you something positive, your brain will automatically search for the negative. Apple comes out with two options and a subscription that is cheaper than Adobe and you can still buy the software separately. There is nothing to complain about. But our brain immediately goes to “this is just a trick to get more money out of us.”
Who is the Apple Creator Studio Actually For?
This is the part most people are missing. The high-end AI tools in the subscription are not for casual users who play around with Instagram and make some videos on the side. The target customer is the professional filmmaker. And professionals look at this completely differently. If you currently pay for five or six different subscriptions and Apple comes in with one bundle that includes AI tools for voice over, AI generated B-roll and more, and it is cheaper than what you already pay, why is that a bad thing?
A professional sees this and says: the subscription is cheaper than all of my other ones, i save money, i can write it off as a business expense. That is a no-brainer. Apple created something called value.
You Are Not Forced Into a Subscription
This is very important. Apple created two options from the start. If you already purchased Final Cut Pro, nothing changes for you. You still get updates. You can still edit videos. The base of video editing is available to everyone. The subscription is for the high-end features and AI tools on top of that. There is even still a student bundle where you can get everything for $200 and you have it for life. More options is always better.
A Subscription Can Actually Make Software Better
There was an amazing argument i saw in the comments of Matthew O’Brien’s video about this topic. If a company goes subscription, they now have to deliver more than when they just sell a software once. Customers who pay monthly or yearly expect bug fixes, updates and new features. If the company does not deliver, people cancel. So a subscription actually pushes the company to produce more and improve the software. And if we look at Final Cut Pro compared to DaVinci Resolve, there were not that many updates in the last years. Apple was basically sitting on a program that was once very good but was falling behind. With this subscription model, Final Cut Pro can catch up again.
So without the negativity bias: Apple makes more money, but the software also gets better. That is a win for everyone. I recommend checking out Matthew O’Brien’s video on this topic because he highlights the positive side really well.
