[Video] Final Cut Pro for iPad 3.0 – All New Features
AI Transcript Search in Final Cut Pro for iPad
The first AI feature in Final Cut Pro 3.0 is the transcript search. When you open a project, you will notice a new icon. Click on it and Final Cut Pro will start analyzing your media. Once that is done, you can search for any spoken word in your clips. For example, search for “new year” and it will show you every video and audio clip where that word appears. All audio is transcribed automatically, so you can search by word across your entire project.
Visual Search in Final Cut Pro for iPad
Another AI search feature is the visual search. Under “Discover” you now have a visual search option. This lets you type in objects or locations and Final Cut Pro will find the matching clips in your Media Pool. For example, type “bridge” and it shows only clips where a bridge is visible. It works similar to how Google Photos searches through your images. This is very useful if you have large projects with lots of footage.
Beat Detection in Final Cut Pro for iPad
Final Cut Pro 3.0 now has beat detection. Right-click (or long press with your pencil/finger) on a music clip and select “Enable Beat Detection”. You will then see beat markers and lines on the clip in your timeline. If you turn on snapping, you can align your clips to those beats. This is helpful if you want to make cuts that match the rhythm of your music. When you are done, you can turn beat detection off again.
Montage Maker in Final Cut Pro for iPad
The Montage Maker is a new AI tool that tries to build a montage from your clips. You can either let it use everything in your Media Pool or manually select specific clips and then tap the new montage icon. Before adding it to your timeline, you get a preview where you can rearrange clips, replace them, delete them or add new ones. You can also choose the aspect ratio, add music (either generated music from Final Cut Pro or imported music) and set the speed.
Now, here is my honest opinion on the Montage Maker: I think it is not good. Even though Final Cut Pro has a beat detector, the Montage Maker does not cut clips to the music beats. It basically creates a simple slideshow-style arrangement. If you just need a very basic slideshow and do not care about timing or music sync, then maybe it is fine. But for real editing it does not help much. You still have to go in and manually adjust everything. The intermediate editing step it creates feels like a dumbed-down video editor inside the actual editor, and it does not really save you time. The rearranging barely works and the speed control does not sync with music at all.
New Demo Project in Final Cut Pro for iPad
Apple added a new demo project featuring singer-songwriter Ellie Sherlock. You can download it by clicking the circle icon and selecting “Download Demo Projects”. The project is about 4.86 GB and includes two timelines: a music video and a behind-the-scenes documentary. If you want a smaller project to practice with, there is also the Lunar New Year demo project at only 350 MB. Demo projects are great for learning because you can see how a professional project is structured and try to rebuild it yourself.
Dynamic Titles and New Assets in Final Cut Pro for iPad
Apple expanded the library of effects, transitions, and titles. When you go to the titles section, you will see a new category. Everything new is marked with a small purple dot so you know what has been added. At the beginning, the library was very limited, but with each update they are adding more downloadable assets. These are part of the subscription and give you more options for styling your videos.
Multiple Selection in the Inspector
This is in my opinion the most important change in version 3.0. In the past, if you wanted to change something in the Inspector, you had to do it for each clip individually. Now you can select multiple clips, go to the Inspector, and apply changes to all of them at once. For example, you can select several clips, add a color adjustment and change the contrast, and it applies to all selected clips. This is what a pro software should have and it actually makes you a faster editor. If you need to make the same change across many clips at the end of your project, this saves a lot of time.
Background Export in Final Cut Pro for iPad
With iPadOS 26 introducing background rendering, Final Cut Pro now supports background exports. This means you can start an export and continue working on other things while your video renders. You can also track the progress through live activities. This was a long-requested feature and it is great to finally have it.
External Monitor Support in Final Cut Pro for iPad
If you have an iPad Pro, you can now use Final Cut Pro on an external monitor without any issues. You can move the window to the external display and get more screen space for your timeline. Even if you do not have an iPad Pro or an external monitor, you can use screen mirroring to your Mac and enable external monitor playback. A nice hack is to put the preview into picture-in-picture mode, make it as small as possible, and then you get a much bigger timeline view on your iPad. Final Cut Pro also now supports many different window sizes (not just landscape and vertical like before), so you have more flexibility with how you arrange your workspace.
Image Playground in Final Cut Pro for iPad
Under the Share menu, you can now open Image Playground. This is Apple’s AI image generator and you can use it directly inside Final Cut Pro to generate images for your projects.
Show OSC Controls for Generators
When you add a generator (for example a grid) to your timeline, you can now go to the Inspector, click on “Options” and enable “Show OSC”. This gives you on-screen handles that let you adjust, rotate and scale the generator directly in the viewer. You can use two-finger gestures to zoom in and out while adjusting. These handles make it much easier to work with templates and generators.
Final Thoughts on Final Cut Pro for iPad 3.0
Some of these changes are really good. The transcript search and visual search are useful for bigger projects where you need to organize and find footage quickly. The multiple selection in the Inspector is the best change because it actually speeds up your editing. Background export is also a welcome addition. The Montage Maker, on the other hand, is disappointing. It does not sync to music, the intermediate editing step feels unnecessary, and it does not save you much time compared to just editing manually.
Apple is making progress, but the rate of updates is still slow compared to something like DaVinci Resolve which gets updates almost every month. Final Cut Pro for iPad is designed for touch and works great with the Apple Pencil, so it has its strengths. But if your projects are big and you want the full desktop experience on iPad, DaVinci Resolve is still the go-to.
