WHOOP Broke UX Promise: And Nobody Talks About It
In this video I talk about a frustrating UX problem in the Whoop app that has been driving me crazy for months. If you use a Whoop tracker, you probably noticed that the app keeps switching to the “More” tab instead of staying on the Home tab when you come back from another app. Let me show you what I mean.

[Video] Whoop App UX Problem That Needs to Be Fixed
What is the Whoop App UX Problem?
Whoop is a premium fitness tracking device with a subscription model. Over two years it can cost more than an Apple Watch. And one of the main reasons people pay for it is the data. The Home tab is where all your stats live and it is the page you want to see every time you open the app.
But since a couple of updates, the app started doing something really annoying. When you switch to another app and come back to Whoop, you don’t land on the Home tab anymore. Instead the app throws you to the “More” tab. And the More tab is basically just the shop, referral program and other upsell content.
Why This is a Big Deal for Premium Users
You might think it is just one extra click. But if you open the app 20, 30, even 40 times a day like I do, that one click adds up fast. Every single time you have to tap back to the Home tab just to see the data you are paying for.
As a premium member who is paying a subscription for this, being forced to see the shop page every time I come back to the app is not a good experience. There are better ways to try to upsell products instead of changing the core navigation behavior.
How Other Apps Handle This Better
Let me give you a comparison. Audible does something similar where they show you a homepage with advertisements instead of your library when you first open the app. But at least when you switch to another app and come back, Audible stays on the page where you left off. That is an acceptable approach. Show me an ad when I first open the app, fine. But do not force the app back to an ad page every time I switch between apps.
The Whoop app used to work correctly. This behavior was introduced in a recent update and it does not happen 100% of the time, which makes it even more frustrating because it is inconsistent.
What Whoop Should Fix
The fix is simple. When a user switches to another app and comes back, keep the app on whatever tab they were using. Do not redirect them to the More tab or any other page. The data page is the reason people buy and subscribe to Whoop in the first place. If enough people speak up about this, maybe they will change it. Let me know in the comments if you experience the same thing.
