How to PIXEL-BLUR Face in DaVinci Resolve iPad

In this article i will show you how you can add a Mosaic Blur Effect on top of Objects and Faces using DaVinci Resolve for the iPad. This is a great technique if you have to blur something in your video. Also this is a very fast method.

How to use Mosaic Blur effect on objects and clips?

Open the Effects Tab and search for the “Mosaic Blur” effect and drag & drop it to the clip you want it to apply.

To change the Blur settings select the clip and open the inspector. Go to the effects tab and change the “Pixel Frequency”.

You can use this effect in all Pages of DVR, even on the EDIT, COLOR and FUSION PAGE. This effect will apply to the complete clip selected, but what if we only want to apply this to a certain area of our clip? For that we are going to the Color Page of DaVinci Resolve for iPad.

How to use Mosaic Blur effect to Blur a face?

To blur a face go to the Color Page and add a new Node (Shift + S) and add a circle window to that node.

With the window added to the node, what ever we will change and add to this node will only effect the inside of the window and not the complete clip.
You can see what will be effected even in the small preview of the Node.

In the Effects Tab search for the “Mosaic Blur” and add it to the Node.

Select the Node and like before you can change the settings for the Mosaic Blur. Change the “Pixel Frequency” to make the mosaic stronger or soft.

There are some cool options for the Mosaic Blur. When you change the “Cell Shape” you can change the Pixel Shape from Square to Hexagon or Triangle.

What about moving objects and persons?

By default the window we placed will be sitting on the same position so if the subject is moving than you have to animate and follow the movement of the subject.

Tip: Sometimes the movement is so little that just a bigger window would do the job. In these cases you don’t have to animate your window.

If you have the Studio Version of DaVinci Resolve, the easies animation would be to use the Magic Mask. You can combine the Magic Mask with the window node. This way the window will follow the subject. How to use Magic Mask read this article here: DaVinci Resolve iPad: MAGIC MASK 😱 Crazzy Good!
