How To Cinematic Look (DaVinci Resolve iPad)

In this article i will show you a very powerful technique in DaVinci Resolve for the iPad to create the cinematic look we all want. A very common way in Color Grading is to use desaturated blacks. But how can we actually achieve this with the iPad? Today i will show you two solutions.

The Problem with just Saturation increase

If we just increase the saturation we end up with a video that also has more saturated blacks. And that does not look professional. This is why we want to keep the shadows and blacks desaturated.

Solution 1: Use the Curve Luma vs Saturation to isolate the Black

Go to the Curves and open the Curves “Lum vs Sat” (Luma vs Saturation) and bring the left point all to the bottom (blacks) and create a second point.

You keep the second point on the horizontal line, but if you push it more towards the left more black will be selected.

Now you can do your Saturation changes and it will not affect the Black and Shadow parts of your Video.

Solution 2: Use Chroma Dark in DaVinci Resolve iPad

A very fast and powerful way to keep the shadow and dark parts desaturated is by using the Preset called “Chroma Dark”. But the Problem is, that we do not have this feature in the iPad Version of DaVinci Resolve. That is not true… i will show you how you can use Chroma Dark also on the iPad.

Open the Shortcuts Menu (Option + Command + K) and go to the Color Commands and search for the Presets. Here you can give “Chroma Dark” a shortcut.

Add a new node and use the shortcut. This will add a Qualifier selection than does not select the blacks.

When you now change the Saturation in the Color Wheels it will not affect the Shadows and Blacks.
