Blackmagic Just Gave Us Full Control Over Cloud Media – Here’s How

In this video/article i will show you how the new Feature “Sync Original Media” in DaVinci Resolve for iPad and the Blackmagic Cloud works. This is an amazing new feature that gives you and your team more control over how you want to use the Media from the BM Cloud in your project. Let me show you what it does and how it can help you.

Why do we even need this new Feature when working with the Blackmagic Cloud?

After you click on "New Project" you will get this window here where you can change alot of the settings how you want to work with this Cloud Project.

When it comes to the default setting for synchronizing your Media you have three options.

Info: If you work with multiple users on the cloud project and you want to save space on the cloud, then the option “Sync Proxies Only” is more then enough. Also for editing the proxy is enough to get the job done. The final video will be rendered from the person who has all the originals.

The Problem with this Setting is, you can either decide to upload all Originals or no Originals. But what if there are just a couple of files where you need the Originals and the rest the Proxy would be fine?

Let’s say a couple of videos your Colourist who is in Melbourne needs access to the Originals. This is where the new Feature that i will show you comes in handy. In my example i keep the Setting to Proxy Only.

How does the “Sync Original Media” work?

In my example project i kept the setting on sync only Proxy Files. That means if i add a new Media to the project from my iPad it will only upload the Proxy to the BM Cloud. And in the most cases this is what you want. But what if you need to sync that one original file? Easy, in the Edit Page, right click on the File and select "Sync Original Media".

Important: This Feature is only showing in the Edit Page of DaVinci Resolve. You can’t use it from the Cut Page.

What if “Sync Original Media” does not work or is greyed out?

I shoot a video from my iPhone via Blackmagic Camera App that created an Original and a Proxy and uploaded both to the Blackmagic Cloud. On my iPad i only downloaded the Proxy File using the BM Cloud Project. However DVR does not understand that this is the Proxy file, yet. So if i want to download the Original with the new right click "Sync Original Media" option, the Feature is greyed out.

The BM Cloud Project created Folders for this project. (You can choose the location of these folders when you create a new Cloud Project.) I go to Cloud Files.

Then Camera Uploads.

In this folder are all the Originals and in the sub-folder Proxy are the Proxy Files.

After DVR know that it is now a Proxy you will see this little icon in the bottom of the Media.

And to get the Originals from the Cloud i can now right click on that file and the Feature "Sync Original Media" is available to click.
