In this article i will show you how professional video editors use the Power Bins Feature in DaVinci Resolve for iPad proper. I already made an article where i explain you what a power bin is. If you want a refresh, read that article first here. I will give you a short overview and then start right into some advanced techniques what you can actually do with Power Bins. These steps will make you so much faster than the rest of the Editors out there. Have fun and i hope you learn something.

What are Power Bins?

Go to the Edit Page and in the Media Pool click on the three dots and select “Show Power Bins”. Then you will have the Power Bins on the left side.

Everything you place inside the Power Bins will be available in all of your Projects in the current DaVinci Resolve Library. Perfect for Transitions, Logos and everything you have to reuse alot.

Advanced Power Bin Hack #1: Position and Scale Settings

Let’s say you reuse a Logo and every time after you place it onto the Timeline You have to do some changes.

You change the scale and zoom and maybe even change the positioning.

Instead of doing this every single time. Do these steps before you bring the Logo to your Timeline to save these changes directly into the Power Bin Clip. Select the Clip in the Power Bin and open the Inspector.

Tip: What if you want to reuse the same Logo (Text) but with different settings and positions? Simply duplicate the clip in the Power Bin and do the changes to the duplicate. Give each Clip a Name so you remember which one it was. For example “Logo 1 – Top Left” and “Logo 1 – Bottom Right”.

Advanced Power Bin Hack #2: Sound Effects (SFX) Volume, Markers, Keyframes and In & Out Points

Let’s say you are using a specific SFX but you always have to decrease the volume.

Again, select the clip (the SFX) in the Power Bin and open the Inspector.

Do your volume changes here before you bring the clip into the timeline.

This way from now on when you bring the SFX into your Timeline the volume is already set.

Tip: You can also add Markers, change the In and Out Points and add Keyframes to these Clips.

Because the effect is actually in a DCI aspect ratio, which is different to the 16:9 aspect ratio. We have to do some changes.

To fix the top and bottom bars we can increase the zoom to cover the complete window.

And then like usual with these overlay effects you have to change the Composite Mode to “Overlay” and change the slider so it works for your desire.

But instead of doing this every single time you bring in the effect to the timeline, we can apply these changes even before. Select the clip in the Power Bin and open the Inspector.

Tip: You can save anything that is available inside of the Inspector also to a Power Bin Clip. Which means you can drastically increase your editing speed with all these custom templates. Also what you can do is only limited by your thinking. So go and use these Power Bins Advanced Hacks!
