In this article/video i will show you the new Rulers and Guides Feature in DaVinci Resolve for iPad that makes editing so much smoother and easier on the iPad. This was a Feature that was missing and now we finally have it! This is a must known for real editors. I will show your how you can use the Guides and change the values to match what you need.

How to enable the Rulers & Guides in DaVinci Resolve for iPad?

To enable the Rulers & Guides click on the little icon on the top right where you find all types of different presets for Social Media and Broadcast Film. These where already part of DVR but on the bottom you will find the two new Features "Rulers" and the "Guides". Highlight both to enable them.

Tip: You can always toggle the Rulers & Guides by clicking on the icon.

What are the Rulers & Guides in DVR iPad?

Like the name suggests the Rulers add a ruler in the viewer window so you see exactly where objects, subjects in your video are positioned. And with the Guides you can add lines to the viewer that are not rendered in the finished video. These guides are to help you make your edits. For example what if all your shoots the subject should be on the same eye line lever? Easy place a horizontal guide on the eye line level and you see where the subjects should be placed.

How to add a new Guide in DVR iPad?

When you click on the ruler and drag & drop into the viewer you can place a new guide.

Another way to add a new Guide by right click (longer press) on the ruler and choose "Add Guide...".

In this window you can change where the guide should be placed. Horizontal or Vertical and the Position 0 is exactly in the middle.

How to edit a guide and change the position afterwards (Edit Page)?

To Edit a guide you have to right click on the guide but not exactly on the ruler. For example in the EDIT PAGE you can simply zoom out with your two fingers (swipe) and right click on a guide and select "Edit Guide...".

How to delete a Guide?

If you right-click on the guide itself and you see the context menu where you can also edit a guide there you can individually delete a guide by clicking on “Remove Guides”. Or you can delete all verticals, all horizontal or all guides at once by right click on the rulers.

To clear all guides you can right click on the rulers and choose "Clear All Guides".

How to edit a guide in the Cut Page?

You can do this in the CUT PAGE aswell but because we can't use the two fingers for zoom in or out in the viewer we have to change the layout position of the viewer and timeline. To edit the horizontal guides make the timeline bigger an then you have space left and right of the viewer video.

How to use Guides to align Titles?

Guides are not just for you to see eye lines, or rule of thirds or what ever you like to guide. You can use guides for alignment. Like simply drag & drop a title into the viewer and change the position by aligning the title to the guides.

How to change the Rulers from Pixels to Percentage?

The rulers can be shown with Pixels or Percentage.

When you change to percentage 0% will start on the top left of the video. And 100% is the other side of the video.

How to lock the Guides?

If you don't want that your guide move by accident you can lock the guides with the lock icon or right click on the rulers and choose "Lock Guides".
